Can I design cars with a mechanical engineering degree?

Can I design cars with a mechanical engineering degree?

Engineering is NOT "Design" in the sense we are discussing on this website. These are separate fields. Engineering deals with the relationships between things. Design deals with the relationships between things and human beings - quite a difference.
Some engineers are called "designers" but when we are talking about Industrial Design/Automotive Design/Styling (the last word is not my favorite term), then "design" is something else.
There is no doubt that engineering understanding would be helpful in informing a car designer about what he is doing but a standard engineering course of study is not a necessary or useful thing.
In terms of the initial question: the manufacturers hiring "designers" are NOT looking at engineering graduates.
On the other hand, one's chances of getting into an engineering field are infinitely better than getting hired as a car designer at an automotive studio.

To all the "mechanical engineers" out there: HAVING A DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WILL NOT GET YOU A JOB AS A CAR DESIGNER. YOU WILL HAVE TO DO A 4YEAR COURSE IN TRANSPORTATION DESIGN OR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN TO BE CONSIDERED- SIMPLE AS THAT!
However, with an engineering degree in the automotive industry, your position will be to simply TRANSLATE a car designer's vision from paper to practical reality. YOU ARE NOT A DESIGNER.
